An Introduction to Healing

Hello, my name is Renata Zeh, owner of Setauket Bikram Yoga.

I’m writing to you today to share my story of healing and fitness. I’m hoping that this story will inspire hope within you and prove to you that chronic pain doesn’t have to be permanent. This will also show you that even at a mature age the body of your dreams is still possible.

Physical activity has always been a part of my life. I swam competitively as a youth; and as an adult, I was involved with aerobics, weight lifting, kick boxing, CrossFit, and even some conventional yoga.

In early adulthood, I started to experience back pain and eventually that back pain became chronic. I learned to live with this pain on a daily basis and just hoped that it wouldn’t worsen. By age 45, it did just that…

At this point, I felt like I was in a constant state of agony. My back was in so much pain that I could barely bend forward or side to side. It was about this time that my husband, Bill, mentioned “Hot Yoga” to me. He had a friend who was an instructor and eventually convinced me to give it a shot.

I have to tell you, I was pretty skeptical.

I could barely bend and all the poses that I knew of seemed as if they would be impossible. But I promised Bill I would give it a chance anyway.
Bill loved it. I, on the other hand, found myself in a love/hate relationship.

My body loved the Hot Yoga, but my mind was fighting me every step of the way with the negative “chatter” of frustration, discomfort, impatience, and intolerance.

I did Hot Yoga for about two years half-heartedly before I started to notice my chronic pain disappearing. It was at that moment that all the “chatter” in my mind disappeared and I was left feeling one stark emotion… Regret.

I regretted that I didn’t take this Hot Yoga thing more seriously sooner rather than later. From that point forward, I committed myself to attending 3-4 classes every week. Not only did my life become 100% pain free, I also noticed many other benefits: a huge jump in my energy level; my clarity of mind, focus, and concentration greatly improved; my blood pressure and sugar levels were exemplary; not to mention having a six-pack of abs in my late forties – Hot Yoga was magic! I had to find a way to help people experience this new way of life that I had discovered.

In 2010, I went to Yoga Teacher Training to become a certified teacher, which turned out to be an amazing gift to myself. I started teaching the very next day after graduation, and a year later, Bill and I bought the Yoga studio.

We loved all the positive changes that practicing Hot Yoga brought to our bodies, our minds, and our relationships toward each other and the world around us – our lives felt new, exciting and invigorating! So now, we could share this life transforming experience with everyone through our very own Yoga Studio.
