With regular practice, the process of how yoga can build a better you through mind, body and soul continues to surprise. The more we strive to understand or unravel it, the more we learn about ourselves and others. What makes yoga so magical?
When you are new to the practice the experience of yoga is mostly physical. You may feel tightness of the muscles, ligaments and tendons. You may feel inflexible and find yourself unable to balance. You sweat and pant, gasp for air, feel uncomfortable or dizzy, even want to leave the yoga room.
Then you come back. For many practitioners, the experience of just one class makes your body feel great. For others, it takes a few more classes to find your practice beneficial and enjoyable. You become more aware of your breathing, of your body’s strengths and areas that need some work or healing. You start witnessing your thoughts, perhaps they are less panicky and judgmental and are more positive and caring about you and others. Feelings of fatigue or tension transform to feelings of vitality and peace. There it is – yoga magic – just a couple of classes can open up for you a whole new way of being.
There is a lot of science behind the mechanics of yoga and how through holding poses your body undergoes a natural process of detoxification and cleansing from cellular level. Each posture sets the perfect basis for the next, compressing and stretching the appropriate muscles, organs, ligaments and tendons. The practice helps move fresh, oxygenated blood throughout your body restoring all systems from harmful byproducts of hormones, bad nutrition, environmental factors, slower rate of repair as your body ages, and stress.
As your body strengthens through regular practice, you also witness a transformation in your way of thinking – of having more freedom. Your mind becomes calmer and clearer, and you gain a deeper awareness and understanding of how to best nurture your body and mind. This, in turn, enhances your self-confidence and self-esteem, and helps to guide you to choices that will most fulfill and satisfy your true Self.
Yoga will help you get wherever you want to get. Whatever you do, stay committed. Keep practicing and use yoga as a tool to unlock the best version of yourself – it’s there! Deep breaths, solid postures and practice will always get you there.
